At the Gate of Heavenly Peace, 1989

by Shirley Geok-lin Lim

How many? Too many to count.
How many? Too many to count.
They ascend from the pit,
Neither flying nor rising,
Neither angels nor demons,
Souls lost, whom God must love.

They sing without mouths,
Shapes flocking, dispersing,
Over and over again
They ascend from the pit

Music unheard, not day nor night.
You need not believe it.
They ascend, souls lost, lost to us.
